The story of the century…

A student film, cranked to 11…

In high school, I was enrolled in PVA, the Performing and Visual Arts Magnet Program, as a film student. Every year, we would be tasked with creating a final project, a short film of our own creation. Every year, I would work to push the boundaries and top my previous work, by trying new styles of storytelling, ranging from animations, documentaries, and even a web series called Alec for President.

For my final final project, I decided to do something no previous PVA film student has attempted: a feature length film. With only 6 months until the due date, this became an incredible challenge. Balancing an entire production whilst navigating the everyday struggles of high school life was difficult. Operating as director, producer, writer, editor, and lead actor, i was involved in every single step of production.

Production didn’t go smoothly. There were a number of challenges I faced to complete this film, including scheduling conflicts, equipment unavailable to rent, damaged camera gear, and re-shoots. A majority of these challenges were the result of working within a school environment, where everyone is attempting to complete a large-scale film of their own for their final project. Since the scale of my film was much larger than the rest of my class, these challenges were exacerbated and could snowball into other problems down the line. Despite this, I was able to complete my film on-time.

Incontinuous is not a perfect film- looking today, there are many things that I would fix or change, that younger me wouldn’t have thought about or accounted for. Despite this, I am still incredibly proud of this piece, because it tested every piece of skillset available and made PVA Film history as the first feature length film created.

The final runtime of Incontinuous was 1 hour, 16 minutes.
